Sri Rameshwara Temple is a very important Hindu temple in Thirthahalli, a town in the Shivamogga district. The temple is made of stone and is located next to the Tunga River. It’s near a special place called Parasurama Theertha. Inside the temple, there’s a linga (a sacred stone) that was placed there by Sage Parashurama, so the temple is also called Parashurama Theertha.

A long time ago, Sage Parashurama washed his axe here to remove a tiny blood stain, and this happened on a special day called “Sesame Amavasya,” which is the new moon day of the Margashira month in the Hindu calendar. Because this area had many holy spots (called Tirthas) along the Tunga River, it was once called Tirtha Rajpura. Over time, this name changed to Thirthahalli.

The Joyful Ellu Amavase Jatra
One of the most awaited events at Sri Rameshwara Temple is the annual Ellu Amavase Jatra, a grand five-day festival. During this time, the main idol, or Utsava Murti, is ceremoniously taken to the Tunga River for special prayers. This beautiful tradition draws lakhs of devotees, who come together to celebrate faith and culture.
